Research
The NCSI Research Priorities Report (June 2010) culminates the work of the former research workstream, which brought together experts in the field of survivorship research and prevalence modeling, together with primary care, NHS and ‘consumer’ representation. Voluntary sector perspectives were drawn from the major UK cancer charities, together with representatives of site-specific charities working in the most common cancers and a representative of Cancer 52 (coordinating input of the less common cancers).
The workstream was tasked to map the survivorship journey and, for each point on that journey, to identify what is, and what is not, known from established research. The work was delivered in three phases. The first year focused on identifying the research unknowns and priorities and securing the early involvement of potential funders. The second year involved identifying and securing funding and then commissioning research to address the highest priorities that have been agreed in the first year. The first commissioned projects commenced in the third year.
Work was previously completed to map the issues faced by people with cancer that need further research for the four common cancers and then the rarer cancers collectively. The reports for this work are available to download below.
A comprehensive review of the evidence base for survivorship, which incorporated a consultation with researchers, clinicians and people affected by cancer on their priorities for future research was completed in December 2009. The main report and detailed technical reports covering each of the three parts of the evidence review are available below.
The mapping, the evidence review, the consultation exercise and the views and issues identified by the other (former) work streams have been brought together into a finalized report (below) as part of an agreed set of research priorities to take be taken forward by the National Cancer Research Institute – download the priorities here:
